Yeah, I’ve been on a hiatus, doing private consulting, earning some cash. So the “next couple of months” comment was optimistic. Bleh.

I can’t promise anything, but I’d like to start this back up again. If not, you’ve got the source and my blessing to run with it.

Re the proxy: Oh yeah, we’re certainly aware that we need proxy capabilities in some situations, and we’re working to add it in. (That said, proxying isn’t the only way two people behind NAT can talk to each other, see STUN)

Re the nonstandard protocol: We looked at SIP and decided that it would be too difficult to both add encryption and do reliable file transfer over the same channel at the same time, and that with the crypto required we wouldn’t be interoperating with too many people anyways. We may revisit that decision at some point, but I’m more concerned with operating cleanly within our own realm before we go interoperating with the rest of the planet. It would be too easy for a man-in-the-middle to claim lack of crypto SIP, and drop the connection into an unprotected mode. We’re trying to keep it simple.

I haven’t looked at your data transmission protocols yet so maybe I’m saying something stupid. But anyway, maybe it’s not such a bad idea to put encrytion on top of existing protols such as SIP or IAX2?

Be sure to add proxy functionality in cutlass! The only way p2p voip can work when both sender and receiver are behind hiding NAT (as is true most of the times with broadband routers) is to use proxy functionality from those active p2p voip clients which do have a direct connection. (cfr skype)

Additionally, a way to find out whether a p2p voip client is active would be necessary! (like skype propagating live messages through the network).
